Hiring a Design Engineer for Kesko Design System

Hi 👋🏻, I’m Arielle, a Design Systems Architect working with Kesko. I’m currently helping to strengthen the existing design systems team in the organization, whose main responsibility is building and maintaining Kesko’s design and frontend infrastructure.

Right now, we’re looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join this newly founded team. Someone who has a hybrid designer/developer experience, is kind, empathetic, and prefers the freedom that working in a hybrid environment gives them.

In this role, you will work together with our product teams and me, Arielle, to design and develop the fundamental building blocks of Kesko’s products to accelerate development and elevate the quality and consistency of product team work. You will also find yourself talking to the system’s users, hosting monthly design system sessions, and reaching outside your role as much as you see fit.

Our frontend stack is web standards based and consists of components that are written in JavaScript, HTML and CSS. They ship as standards based custom elements making them compatible with current and future JavaScript based frameworks like Angular, React, Vue and Next.js.

In addition to frontend, you will also spend the majority of your time in Figma to maintain and collaborate on Kesko’s Figma Toolkit including defining and standardizing reusable components. You’ll also receive all the support needed from both the product teams and myself.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary owner of Kesko’s Figma Toolkit including defining and standardizing reusable design components.

  • Help develop and maintain Kesko’s frontend tooling and the design system infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with product, design and engineering to create design components that evolve and improve the design system.

  • Advocate for accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.

  • Help teams across Kesko to onboard the design system and provide support for its users.

  • Write clear and detailed documentation for multiple audiences.

  • Help maintain a culture of empathy, safety and belonging where all voices are heard.

Experience

  • Several years of experience working in cross-functional product teams, on design systems, and with accessibility.

  • Several years of experience building design systems with Figma.

  • Several years of experience with React, Next.js and TypeScript.

  • Familiarity with platform conventions for responsive web as well as iOS and Android.

  • Good understanding of web standards based development using semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more.

  • Experience with modern JavaScript libraries and tooling, and debugging JavaScript issues.

  • Experience writing maintainable and scalable CSS.

  • Experience nurturing a work environment that allows everyone to bring their whole selves to work, and values diversity and inclusion.

  • Bonus points for experience with Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, Lit, Stencil, Custom Elements Manifest, and similar.

Message from Arielle

“Don’t meet every single requirement? We’re dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive team, so if you’re excited about this role, but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with the description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate.” 🧡
