Design Principles of Nosto Design System

Nosto hired me in 2017 to help reimagine what the company’s approach to designing and building digital products at scale should look like. I started this work by conducting a series of user research activities and workshops to reveal a lack of alignment and personal biases across business units, products and teams to understand how the design system could help them.

When we had a clear view of the challenges that we wanted to solve, it was a matter of creating fundamental principles for the system that they could follow as a team. These are the draft design principles that I helped to bring together:

1. Build for merchants

We put our merchants at the center of everything we do. Our success comes from their success and we focus on helping them serve their customers better. We aim to understand the challenges of different types of merchants and base our decisions on data and research whenever possible.

2. Make it actionable

We build tools that empower retailers to work with complex things in an easy way. Our focus is on delivering value by helping our customers reach their objectives, and all our design decisions strive to make that possible.

3. Aim for consistency

The experience of using Nosto should be cohesive, so we use consistent language, patterns, and components when building new things. We promote familiarity and approachability by investing in keeping things aligned.

4. Design with purpose

Our aim is to deliver an enjoyable experience to our merchants by making their lives easier and helping them succeed in their business. We believe that good design serves a purpose and we put in the effort in order to help our product teams move fast.
